Based on international standards, the approach will maximise the reuse of existing electric mobility technologies. This will pave the road for the fast deployment of electric mobility in urban public transportation, ABB said. The first such project will be implemented in 2015 in Luxembourg.
For the project, the latest electric hybrid bus from Volvo will be used which will be introduced to the public during the upcoming IAA in Hannover (Germany). According to Volvo, this bus consumes 75% less fuel than conventional diesel buses.
Within the scope of the project, ABB and Volvo will leverage their experience with power grids and electric buses to develop further fast-charging standards for buses. Examples could be communication protocols for infrastructure, energy grids, and electric buses.
The planned charging standard for electric buses will widely be based on the global standard for fast charging which has been developed recently for passenger cars and already guarantees safe operation. These standards also contribute in boosting investments and stimulate long-term commitment to and deployment of clean mobility technologies.
For ABB, this is not its first activity in the area of fast charging stations for vehicles. Since 2010, the company has installed more than 1500 DC fast charging stations worldwide as well as implemented charging networks for carmakers, utilities, government agencies and private customers, including nation-wide charging networks in the Netherlands, Estonia and Denmark.
