Audio amplifiers with digital input and diagnostic functions bring rich sound into the car

With the FDA803D and FDA903D ICs, STMicroelectronics offers two automotive audio amplifiers with digital input, which simplify integration thanks to their extensive equipment. They will also provide high reliability in telematics and eCall systems as well as AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System) applications for hybrid and electric vehicles. And they can also be used to enhance high-end infotainment systems.

With digital I2S and TDM audio inputs and feedback after filter topology to reduce noise and improve sound quality, these 1x45W class D amplifiers provide simpler design and lower component costs. These features, combined with full I2C automotive diagnostic capabilities, including play mode offset and open-load detection, enable the FDA803D and FDA903D to embody the next generation of amplifiers for cost-effective implementation of essential safety devices. With the integrated features mentioned, the modules also simplify certification according to the required ASIL (Automotive Safety Integrity Level) in accordance with ISO 26262.

The FDA903D has an additional load current monitoring function, which also allows continuous monitoring of the loudspeaker and thus, in addition to advanced diagnostic functions, also enables an increase in loudspeaker performance.

The new components extend ST's FDA family for automotive applications. The range includes two- and four-channel versions with up to 4x135 W power, features for reliable diagnostic functions and ST's innovative feedback after filter concept.

Due to their high audio quality, the FDA803D and FDA903D can be used to expand sophisticated infotainment systems with additional audio channels. They can drive speakers with impedances down to 2 ohms and bring a built-in output power limit to protect small or inexpensive speakers. Up to 90% efficiency (at 4 ohms, 1 kHz and 20 W) and the excellent thermal characteristics of the PowerSSO36 housing with exposed heat distributor on the underside allow heat sink-less designs, resulting in smaller modules and easier installation in the vehicle.

FDA803D and FDA903D have a wide operating voltage range from 3.3 V to 18 V and are therefore suitable for use in a variety of systems powered from the vehicle electrical system or other sources. The components are tested to CISPR Class V, which helps ensure compliance with the stringent EMC specifications applicable to automotive equipment.
