Augmented Reality: A growth market for automotive electronics

September 20, 2017 // By Christoph Hammerschmidt
According to the market research agency Markets&Markets, equipment for augmented reality technology in vehicles is a market with enormous growth potential.

The market for Augmented Reality (AR) in the automotive industry mainly includes head-up displays (HUDs) as well as the associated sensors and signal conditioning. According to a recently published study by Markets&Markets, the HUDs are being used in parallel with the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that are becoming more and more standard, especially in high-end vehicles. At the same time, vehicle manufacturers are also in the process of offering these options in the medium and compact class. All this leads to an average annual growth in market volume of 30.3 percent; researchers have calculated a market volume of 7.98 billion US dollars for the year 2025.

High-quality AR-HUDs combine several ADAS functions and display them as graphical information in the driver's field of vision. Developments in the direction of autonomous driving are also driving the equipping with HUD systems, even if the vehicle occupants themselves do not participate actively in the driving process: The vehicle provides the passengers with information about the course of the journey and the surroundings via the AR-HUDs. According to market researchers, the AR-HUDs thus contribute to a safer and more comfortable journey.

The key enabler for automotive AR technology is sensor fusion - the joint processing of sensor data with mutual plausibility control, as is required for most ADAS functions. Further real-time functions will be added in the future. In the dynamic environment in which the vehicles move, such systems require high accuracy and short processing times. Legislation could also prove to be a market driver if certain AR functions were to be prescribed for commercial vehicles in the future. Examples include display systems for the "blind spot" to prevent serious accidents in the future.

The market for AR systems is dominated by a few global players and some regional champions. Markets& Markets is mainly called Continental (Germany), Visteon (USA), Panasonic (Japan) Harman International (USA).
