The driving forces behind the initiative are the automotive OEMs Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen. The newspaper “Automobilwoche” quotes a high-ranking Daimler executive saying “We are providing the initial ignition.” A fundamental consensus has already been achieved, only details are subject to further negotiations. According to the reports, the consortium will establish a high triple-digit number of charging stations, each with up to 30 individual charging points. The stations will be equipped with the CCS connector, a de-facto standard in Europe’s electromobility.
At a later point in time, a similar charging infrastructure could be potentially established in the United States.
The individual charging points will be designed to deliver a charging capacity of 350 kilowatts, enabling vehicles to be recharged for a distance of about 300 km within 20 minutes.
With the move, the German carmakers hope to catch up against Tesla and prepare the ground for their own electromobility attack – by the end of the decade, all German carmakers plan to offer electric vehicles with driving ranges up to 500 km.
