Connectivity MCU enables secure remote updates and fast on-board networks

The STMicroelectronics SPC58 H Line adds three new high-performance processor cores with powerful on-chip peripherals to the Chorus series of automotive MCUs. A large on-chip memory and support for secure OTA updates of the ECU software allow automotive manufacturers to streamline maintenance and expand offerings to their customers. Equipped with Gigabit and 100 Mbit Ethernet ports, the chips enable on-board networks with high data rates.

Decisive functional elements in the powertrain, body, chassis and infotainment system of automobiles are increasingly defined by software. As a result, the secure transmission of updates such as troubleshooting and option packages wirelessly (Over the Air; OTA) helps to improve cost efficiency and convenience for customers. With its state-of-the-art security and generous on-chip code memory, ST's Chorus automotive microcontroller is one of the industry's first gateway/domain controllers capable of securely handling large OTA updates.

The chips are based on the widespread power architecture. Two independent Ethernet ports serve as high-speed connections between several Chorus chips in the entire vehicle and pave the way for fast on-board diagnostics. With an additional 16 CAN-FD and 24 LINFlex interfaces, the Chorus microcontrollers can serve as a gateway for several electronic control units (ECUs) and support smart gateway functionality via two Ethernet interfaces that are also integrated.

In order to protect the connected car functionalities and to enable the secure import of OTA updates, the new Chorus chip contains a Hardware Security Module (HSM) suitable for asymmetric cryptography. It is EVITA Full compliant and implements industry-leading techniques for defense, detection and containment of attacks.

Leading customers have already been provided with samples of the SPC58 Chorus H Line microcontrollers in the next generation of smart gateways and central body modules and are also evaluating the devices for battery management units and ADAS safety controllers.

With configurable, intelligent low-power modes that allow critical functions to be performed in standby mode, Chorus microcontrollers provide an efficient and economical solution for energy-conscious applications such as hybrid and electric vehicles.

For software development with the SPC58 Chorus H Line, in addition to the SPC5 Studio development environment, production-ready Autosar MCAL drivers, security firmware and safety libraries are available. Samples are now available for key customers. Production is expected to start in mid-2020.
