Delphi introduces robust automotive inverter with high power density

Delphi Automotive has launched a new high-performance power inverter that helps increase fuel economy, reduce emissions and cut costs. Designed to power electric motors in hybrid and electric vehicles, the inverter offers characteristics important to vehicle manufacturers.

The power inverter is suitable for both traction electric motors and generators. Its most distinctive feature is an encapsulated power semiconductor device. The patented technology features superior heat dissipation capability when compared to standard power semiconductor modules. Its power density is twice as high as standard modules and eliminates the need for wire bonds, which can be susceptible to breaking.

The inverter, up to 30% smaller than today's production systems, uses patented power silicon packaging to reduce cost, size and weight while increasing overall reliability and extending product lifespan. The unique packaging eliminates wire bonds, enables higher current and power density, and when combined with double-side cooling, reduces the power semiconductor area. By providing heat exchanger, interface, component, and operating parameter (such as voltage and current) options, the power inverter can be customized to meet specific customer requirements. The new power inverter is expected to be in volume production in 2013.

The inverter has been introduced to the public at the eCarTech trade fair in Munich.
