The group, which integrates carmakers Audi, BMW, Daimler and Porsche, chip manufacturers Infineon, NXP and Elmos as well as tier ones Bosch, Continental, Johnson Controls and others, has analysed the technologies required to turn automated driving into reality in mass markets. In a recent workshop with experts from industry, politics and science, the group analysed the state of the technology in automated driving as well as the research need to get automated driving going.
The group sees a clear connection between electromobility and automated driving. "Functions like automated parking and charging improve the driving range of electric vehicles", eNOVA says in a statement. "At the same time, automated driving functions can improve the energy efficiency and thus the driving range".
The experts identified about a dozen technology fields with particular need for action. These technologies will, according to the will of the group, become part of the electromobility R&D roadmap. They were broken down into three fields: Vehicle and system level; components and materials; methodology and tools. In the vehicle and system level, the research fields of interest include:
- adaptive, redundant power and range management
- automated parking in connection with inductive charging
- autonomous and remote-controlled driving at low speeds
- re-design of the electric power distribution system in cars
In the segment of components and materials, the group calls for intensified R&D efforts in the areas of:
- energy-efficient, high-performance ECUs
- fast, cost-effective environmental sensors such as radar, lidar and video.
- In the field of methodologies and tools, the experts call for the development of
- prediction algorithms for automated driving functions,
- internet-based map and navigation services, in particular for digital maps that can be enhanced with bespoke additional informations for automated driving and electric vehicles.
Other topics on the eNOVA list are standards for automated driving functions, in particular for the abovementioned digital maps, as well as for car2x communications. Given the significance of the companies involved it can be expected that
