Microchip taps Kvaser IP for CAN FD

October 26, 2015 // By Christoph Hammerschmidt
Microchip has announced to support CAN Flexibe Data Rate (CAN FD) in its automotive and industrial controllers. For this purpose, the company that already has a strong presence in automotive environments through its MOST infotainment bus silicon has now entered a strategic collaboration with Swedish CAN expert company Kvaser.

CAN FD is an extension to the original CAN protocol as specified in ISO 11898-1 that responds to increased bandwidth requirements in automotive networks. CAN FD allows for a higher data rate and larger packet size that makes it suited for data intensive automotive electronic applications.

The background of the move is that Microchip anticipates a transition from the present CAN 2.0 to CAN FD in the coming years. Microchip’s CAN FD Product Line Manager Orlando Esparza also said that the company has previously already has released automotive-approved CAN FD transceiver products.

Microchip will be using preliminary CAN FD controller samples with ‘Kvaser inside’ to demonstrate its CAN FD capabilities at the upcoming 15th international CAN Conference (iCC) in Vienna, Austria on October 27 and 28, 2015.
