Osram aims for 10,000s of individually addressable pixels in one LED

Last year, Osram Opto Semiconductors had revealed its Eviyos hybrid LED prototype as the first market-ready smart controllable high-resolution LED for adaptive lighting. The prototype accommodated a 32x32 array of 1,024 individually controllable pixels with driving electronics in a 4x4mm package, delivering 4,000 lumens at full power.

At electronica this week, the company was demonstrating its concept vehicle lighting with a virtual demo based on two yet to come LED array devices, the setup combined four single Eviyos (a total of 4x1.024pixels) with which Osram could theoretically deliver about 16,000 lumens. Such large high resolution chips could deliver adaptive lighting in the high-beam while at the same time be used to project patterns in the low-beam area (for driver guidance or for communication with other road users). For now, such a concept could be implemented with about four Eviyos hybrid LEDs but the idea would be to develop extended form factors with even more pixels per die.

Combining multiple Eviyos dies makes the technology scalable to meet the specific requirements of custom applications. The company is currently working on µ-pixelated solutions in the range of 10000s of pixels in one single LED, which will be reducing optics design complexity.

A spokesperson at the demo stand told eeNews Europe that although LED manufacturers such as Osram were ready to deliver for adaptive lighting and on-the-road display projection for car-to-pedestrian communication (in the low-beam area), standards were still lacking to implement such schemes which for now, are considered potentially too distractive for drivers. New standards on traffic rules and projected communication have yet to emerge before projected messages become allowed in traffic.
