Simulation software supports RDE, HPC clusters

IPG, one of the leading suppliers of simulation software for vehicle development, has strengthened its product lineup, particularly in the areas of virtual prototypes and automotive systems engineering, and enables cross-domain testing, for example in the development of driver assistance systems and automated driving functions, drivelines and vehicle dynamics systems.

The core competence of the IPG simulation solutions of the CarMaker product family is to transfer real test scenarios including the environment with real-time capable models for vehicle, road, driver and traffic into the virtual world. The new release now offers the possibility to use the software for parallel simulation on several processors or processor cores. High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters and HPC Light allow tests to be performed even faster by distributed computing on high-performance PCs. For vehicle development, which has to test a large number of scenarios to be safeguarded, especially for driver assistance systems or automated driving functions, the use of such high-performance computers means a reduction in computing time and thus time and cost savings.

With Release 7.0 it is possible to use the open integration and test platform CarMaker for use on HPC clusters and to cover countless virtual test kilometers.

The new RDX test generator for drive system development makes it possible to automatically generate a large number of realistic test cycles for evaluating real driving emissions (RDE) and energy/fuel consumption and use them in virtual driving tests. The test scenarios are generated taking into account adjustable driver behavior and traffic volume and can be used reproducibly for drive system optimization.

With the new product variant CarMaker/TestBed the experts of IPG Automotive especially address the users in the field of drive development at performance test benches. Possible application fields can be described with the keywords RDE, Virtual Electrification, Smart Durability Testing, Attribute Balancing and Functional Testing.

The new software release also shows extensions to its predecessor for real-time modeling and generation of raw sensor signals from sensors. New ultrasonic and radar RSI models complete the portfolio of sensor models in the CarMaker product family. The raw signal interfaces provide detailed physical effects and thus offer the possibility to develop sensor fusion algorithms virtually, for example. No matter whether the focus of the tests is on perception or on decisions to be made. Thanks to a comprehensive environment recognition system, precise driving actions can be derived.

In the areas of driver assistance and automated driving in particular, the mapping of complex traffic scenarios in virtual driving tests plays a decisive role. The Scenario Editor enables you to generate detailed scenarios quickly and efficiently. New features in the Scenario Editor include a new path and route concept, maneuver-based lane changes and flexible placement of traffic on all lanes. In addition, route definition has been considerably simplified and traffic route planning has been made more dynamic. Improved usability of the editor.

The selection of more than 90 new virtual vehicles (trucks, cars, motorcycles, vans), 170 new building types (terraced houses, office and industrial buildings, US suburban houses) and vegetation make even more detailed scenarios possible. The NCAP soft targets are now also included.
