The 3rd generation of TRW's EPS Column Drive is a modular, scalable design, providing more design freedom to carmakers and translates into a larger application bandwidth plus lower life cycle costs. "We have adapted the third generation of our electric power steering with column drive to the strategy of our customers who increasingly utilise modular technologies in their global platforms", said TRW Vice President Steering Engineering Dirk Kesselgruber. "Their modular design principle enables OEMs to chose the suitable motors, electronic control units and other important elements for their specific applications without the necessity for costly and time-consuming modifications at the base design."
To cover the entire spectrum of vehicle platforms, TRW offers two different EPS systems. Common denominator is that they only consume power when the driver actually needs steering assistance. The EPS Column Drive system is mounted at the steering column in the vehicle's interior whereas the EPS Belt Drive transmits the steering power by means of a toothed belt drive to the steering rack. EPS in general consume less power that conventional hydraulic power steering systems, enabling an effective reduction of the vehicle's fuel consumption by 0.3 to 0.4 litres for 100 km.
