Intelligent Motor Control for Automotive Applications
Infineon’s Embedded Power devices combine ARM Processor and bridge drivers on a single chip.

Infineon Technologies has launched the Embedded Power family of Bridge Drivers, which offer a high level of integration to address the growing trend towards intelligent motor control for a number of diverse automotive applications. These new Embedded Power devices integrate a high-performance microcontroller onto one single chip using an ARM Cortex-M3 processor along with nonvolatile memory, analog and mixed signal peripherals, communication interfaces, as well as MOSFET gate drivers. The Embedded Power ICs are designed specifically to enable mechatronic motor-control solutions for a wide range of motor-control applications where a Small-form-factor (SFF) package and a minimum number of external components are essential.

Trends in vehicle motors

An ever increasing number of electrically controlled motors are being integrated into modern automobiles. In 2012, market analysts at IHS Inc., the business information and software analytics company, counted 2.3 billion electrically regulated motors used in cars. They expect this number to increase to 2.9 billion by 2017, which represents an average compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.7%. This averages to around 30 electrically controlled motors per car. Currently, with approximately 68% of these motors being DC-Brushed and 15% being DC Brushless, the number of brushless motors (BLDC) is expected to increase significantly.
