Audi embeds solar cells into sunroofs to extend EV driving range

Audi and Alta Devices, a subsidiary of the Chinese solar cell specialist Hanergy, are together developing a new form of range extender for electric vehicles: Thin-film solar cells, embedded in the glass sunroof. By the end of 2017 a first prototype is to be created.

During the first step of their collaboration, Audi and Hanergy intend to integrate the solar panels produced by Alta Devices into a panoramic glass roof. In future, almost the entire roof area will be covered with solar cells. The generated electricity flows into the wiring system and can, for example, supply the air-conditioning system or the seat heating. The efficiency gain will directly affect the range of an electric car.

In the future, the engineers plan to use the solar power to directly charge the traction battery. “

Innovative solar cells provide the green power. They have an efficiency of more than 25 percent, are particularly thin and flexible. They also function very well even in low light and high temperatures. The solar cells are produced by Alta Devices in California.
