The current update of the BMW software includes, among other things, the preparation for the “Drive Recorder”, which can record the vehicle’s surroundings for 40 seconds with the integrated cameras. This function could help to clarify the causes of accidents in particular. Following reports in the trade press, BMW plans to offer this function for online purchase.

According to the reports, the current update campaign is the largest campaign of this kind ever implemented by a European manufacturer, explained Klaus Fröhlich, the board member responsible for development. Since 2018, BMW has been bringing a modular operating system, with which the entire software inventory of the car can be updated via download, into its vehicles. The software update is downloaded either via a smartphone app or directly via a SIM card integrated in the vehicle.

However, not BMW but its competitor Tesla is considered the  pioneer in software updates for vehicles in the field. With its operating system updates, the electric carmaker regularly adds new functions and also sells access to more sophisticated driver assistance functions.
