Driver monitoring solution enables gesture control, personalization
The system identifies indications of driver fatigue and distraction and ensures the driver’s alertness by triggering an alarm signal or, depending on the vehicle developer’s preference, taking automatic safety measures such as increasing the distance to the vehicle in front through the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system.
In addition, the system contains a driver identification feature that enables vehicle developers to implement a high level of personalization and comfort in that it continuously optimizes the vehicle system and adapts the system’s behavior to the individual driver. As soon as the driver has taken his seat, the system adjusts several settings, for instance, seat position, interior temperature, infotainment volume, preferred radio stations and music program.
The same sensor that monitors the driver’s alertness is also controlling his gestures, enabling gesture control schemes by means of simple, natural hand movements. This reduces the risk of distraction and minimizes the cognitive load of the driver’s brain. Gesture controls avoid distraction inherent to conventional HMIs which require searching the control elements associated to the desired function, as well as pushing buttons and / or touch screen fields.
