Feature-rich automotive boost controller slashes space requirements of Class D audio amps

The MAX25203 requires a battery input voltage of 4.5 V to 42 V at power-up and operates down to 1.8 V after start-up. It achieves a maximum output voltage of up to 70 V and has a low shutdown current of 5 µA. The device is suitable for generating voltages for backlighting and Class D audio amplifiers and offers I²C bus diagnostics, die temperature measurement, phase current monitoring and optional true shutdown to improve system reliability. The output voltage is scalable via the PWM input or the I²C interface. A sync-out function supports additional phases for higher power systems. The device joins ADI’s family of automotive boost controllers, which also includes the MAX25201 and MAX25202 single/dual boost controllers for low-power applications.

The MAX25203 features a variety of useful and relevant features. For example, the factory-programmable gate drive voltage of 5.5 V to 10 V increases power density by reducing the RDS(on) losses of the MOSFETs – for higher efficiency and lower cost. Programmable current-limiting off-time supports short peak current events without oversizing the power supply, resulting in lower circuit costs. The high accuracy of phase-to-phase current sharing (±5 per cent) reduces the size of the inductor. Last but not least, the resistor-programmable switching frequency of up to 2.1 MHz improves EMI and reduces the space and number of external components required.

The MAX25203 comes in a 32-lead TQFN CPU package and is available now, as is the accompanying MAX25203EVKIT evaluation board.
