Hyundai Mobis unveils innovative technologies at Detroit Auto Show

Korean automotive supplier Hyundai Mobis will exhibit for the first time at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), which takes place in mid-September in Detroit. The world’s No. 6 auto supplier plans to exhibit more than 30 next-generation technologies, including its EV platform, an illumination grille, an integrated cockpit and an AR HUD.

Orders from North American automakers totaled $1.7 billion in the first half of 2022; Mobis expects demand for its products to continue.

“We are discovering many new opportunities in the North American market, where competition for future mobility is fierce,” said Axel Maschka, executive vice president and head of global OE sales at Hyundai Mobis. “It’s important for us to meet our customers in Detroit, the heart of the U.S. automotive industry, to showcase our innovations and continue our expansion in the global market.”

At the NAIAS, Hyundai Mobis will showcase numerous new mobility technologies in electrification, ADAS and IVI that are available for mass production. The company will highlight in particular its electrification systems.

One example of Hyundai Mobis’ innovative technology is the electric Complete Chassis Platform Module (eCCPM). This optimized platform for electric vehicles combines braking, steering, suspension, drive and battery systems with scalable aluminum frames. Its ability to adapt its shape predestines it for multi-purpose electric vehicles (PBVs).

The Koreans also plan to showcase their illuminated grille technology at the show: it allows automakers to use the entire grille as a lighting element or to communicate with vehicles or pedestrians. This technology shows how the grille, which gives the first impression of the vehicle, can evolve in the era of electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles.

Among the other Hyundai Mobis developments on display at the show are a next-generation integrated cockpit (M.VICS 3.0), a hologram-based AR head-up display and a swiveling display.

For Hyundai Mobis, North America is the market where it receives the most orders from automakers. In the first half of this year, the company recorded $1.7 billion in orders from North American automakers, representing 45% of this year’s global order target of $3.75 billion. The volume of orders from North American customers has been steadily increasing, with $0.66 billion in 2020, $1.4 billion in 2021 and $1.7 billion in the first half of 2022 alone.

At the show, Hyundai Mobis will also announce its strategic plan for the North American market, aiming to build on this momentum. Axel Maschka will present the future strategies and core technological competencies of the world’s sixth-largest automotive supplier, as well as its plan to strengthen local marketing with its platform-based electrification components and high-quality products.

Hyundai Mobis, based in Seoul, Korea, has particular expertise in sensors, sensor fusion in ECUs and software development for safety control. The company’s products also include various components for electrification, brakes, chassis and suspension, steering, airbags, lighting and automotive electronics. Hyundai Mobis operates an R&D headquarters in Korea and four technology centers in the U.S., Germany, China and India.

The NAIAS will take place from September 14 through September 25.
