Megawatt charging network for long-haul trucks under development
The aim of the innovation cluster project “High-performance charging in long-distance truck transport” (HoLa), which has just started, is to gain insights for a standardised expansion of high-performance truck charging parks throughout Germany. Twenty-two partners from industry and research are involved, including the truck manufacturers Daimler Truck, MAN, Scania and Volvo. Other participants are the Fraunhofer research network, the electrical companies ABB and Siemens as well as a number of universities and the charging network operator Ionity. For their research work, the partners want to build a demonstration track along the A2 motorway. Heavy trucks should be able to call up charging power in the megawatt range.
Specifically, HoLa is to plan a high-performance charging infrastructure for long-distance battery-electric truck transport. In addition, the consortium is to set up and operate such a network as a prototype. This will be done on a demonstration route between Berlin and the Ruhr region. In addition, the project will address research questions surrounding the subsequent nationwide expansion of high-capacity truck charging parks in Germany and create a blueprint for the design of charging locations.
“Electrification is also advancing massively in the commercial vehicle sector. For this to take hold, high-capacity truck charging parks and the possibility of megawatt charging are an important prerequisite,” comments Hildegard Müller, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), which has assumed patronage of the project. “The HoLa project brings together expertise from industry and research and helps to gather much-needed experience in setting up and operating these high-performance charging parks, thus laying the foundations for a nationwide expansion of the new technology.”
Within the framework of the project, two high-power charging points with the so-called Megawatt Charging System (MCS) will be set up, operated and applied in real logistics operations at each of four locations along the A2 federal motorway between the Ruhr region and Berlin.
In the first phase, the sites with CCS charging points for trucks will be planned and constructed. In the second phase, high-power charging points with MCS technology will be installed and commissioned. This will enable megawatt charging for heavy goods vehicles. The charging locations were selected from motorway service areas, logistics centres and depots in order to take into account and evaluate different applications. The start of real operations in logistics is scheduled for autumn 2023.
HoLa is one of three innovation clusters for climate-friendly truck drive technologies that the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) presented at the beginning of September and which it is funding as part of the Electromobility Funding Guideline. With a funding volume of 12 million euros, the project has a total budget of 27 million euros and runs until the end of 2024.
