New generation of ultrasonic ICs offers better performance at a lower price

Almost every car is equipped with several of them: Ultrasonic sensors for parking assistance systems are almost as common as grains of sand in the desert. The chip manufacturer Elmos AG has now introduced two new models with which system costs can be further reduced. They can also be used in industrial applications or robot applications for non-contact distance measurement.

The “Direct Drive” approach used in the new ICs E524.32 and E524.33 permits a significant reduction in system costs, since the transformer and other external components on the sensor board are not required. A simpler PCB layout, a lower overall height and weight savings are further advantages of this system solution.

Compared to the previous ICs, the measurement performance as well as the ESD and EMC behaviour have been significantly improved. In the far range, depending on the transducer type used, the ICs now detect a 75mm round standard obstacle up to a distance of approximately 4 meters. In the case of larger obstacles, even more distant targets can be successfully detected. At close range, the new, revised Smart Damping algorithm reduces the decay time of the transducer so that distances of less than 12cm can be measured with a single transducer. The new near-field detection detects objects immediately in front of the sensor and issues a warning by means of a flag.

Commissioning of the ICs is said to be very simple. Many configurations can be set quickly via the communication interface. In order to be able to react flexibly to the customer application, the optimized IO interface offers up to three configurable measuring ranges, which can be set, for example, for a short, medium and long range. An additional second, configurable threshold and extended setting options for the dynamic gain curve offer additional options.


Communication via the various interfaces is almost identical to the Elmos ICs E524.08/09, so that both ICs can be mixed in the vehicle as required by the customer. If higher ranges are required, the ICs E524.08/09 can be used. If the requirements are lower and the focus is on system costs, the E524.32/33 ICs can be used.

The ICs have numerous diagnostic options, such as monitoring the supply voltages, temperature sensor and detection of communication errors. The measurement of decay time and frequency deviation enable safe sensor operation.
