New modules grow test ecosystem for APIX3 technology

Alfamation S.p.A. is helping to accelerate the development of in-vehicle functions by providing new test capabilities for APIX data systems. The Flexmedia XM APIX3TD1 and APIX3RD1 test modules, which have now been introduced, are aimed primarily at the communications between cameras, processing electronics and displays.

In infotainment and driver assistance systems, APIX technology is used to connect displays and cameras with head units. In this way, uncompressed HD video, audio and control data can be transferred between displays with different resolutions and head units. In addition, APIX facilitates the implementation of two 100 Mbps Ethernet connections over the same cable, which can further reduce cabling costs, weight and space requirements.

The current third generation of APIX (APIX3) aims to meet the advanced requirements for in-vehicle infotainment and cockpit architectures. These architectures support multiple UHD resolutions in vehicle displays based on the latest and future generations of high-performance SoCs.

The new APIX3 technology enables transmission rates of up to 6 Gbps over a shielded twisted pair cable (STP). Over a quad twisted pair connection (QTP) it is a maximum of 12 Gbit/s. This corresponds to four times the speed of the previous APIX2 generation. APIX3 supports video with HD and Ultra HD displays.

To integrate this technology, automotive customers need the appropriate test facilities. The Flexmedia XM APIX3TD1 and APIX3RD1 modules offered by Alfamation are suitable for applications that require high fault coverage and high-speed processing. They not only enable accurate, high-performance testing of transmitting and receiving equipment, but also reliable video quality testing in fractions of a second. The modules provide feature support for Inova’s APIX3 SerDes devices. This includes dual or single link support up to 6 Gbit/s per link, support for HDCP and bi-directional sideband communication, and 10/100BASE-T Ethernet communication. The modules operate with a Gigabit POE Ethernet control interface and feature a command line interface, graphical user interface (GUI) and software APIs such as C#/C++ SDK, NI LabVIEW and Supernova/NI TestStand Step Types.

For testing high-speed digital multimedia connections, the Flexmedia-XM APIX3TD1 video stream generator, based on Inova’s INAP592T chipset, features a pixel-accurate reference pattern generator, programmable frame size, synchs and porches, and customisable video frame content from image files, still and ring buffer movie modes. The module has real-time adjustable overlays and 24-bit video pixel depth; it supports bidirectional sideband communication.

Based on Inova’s INAP592R chipset, the Flexmedia XM APIX3RD1 frame grabber and real-time video stream analyser enables dual, independent analysis of the video stream, including BER/PER/PSN analyses. The module offers region-of-interest (ROI) multiple and simultaneous analysis with video timing detection and burst-enabled video frame grabbing. Like the generator, the analyser supports bidirectional sideband communication.
