Porsche’s JV partner Customcells is a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology ISIT. This history already gives an indication of the company’s special expertise: Customcells, founded in 20212, is considered an expert in cell development with silicon anodes and also with other materials (cathodes, anodes, separators, electrolytes) and coating technologies. It currently manufactures small series in the field of special lithium-ion battery cells, for example for the aerospace and shipbuilding industries, building on flexible manufacturing concepts and state-of-the-art research and production facilities. The joint subsidiary Cellforce Group is based in Tübingen and is expected to grow to up to 80 employees by 2025. Porsche holds the majority of the shares in the JV with 83.75 per cent.
“The battery cell is the combustion chamber of the future. As a new Porsche subsidiary, the Cellforce Group will significantly advance the research, development, production and sales of high-performance cells,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. With the planned high-performance batteries, Porsche expects to significantly increase the energy density compared to current series batteries. The battery could be more compact with the same energy content and have a lower internal resistance.
As a result, it can absorb more energy during recuperation and is at the same time more powerful during rapid charging as well as generally more temperature-resistant. Chemical company BASF has been won as a cell development partner for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries. Production of the batteries is scheduled to begin in 2024. Initially, an annual capacity of at least 100 MWh is planned. That is enough to equip about 1000 vehicles.
