For testing radar antennas as installed in vehicles, the R&S ATS1500C antenna test system from Rohde & Schwarz offers a new temperature test option and a new feed antenna. These innovations enable temperature-controlled measurements over a wide temperature range as well as parallel access to both polarization planes – benefiting both test efficiency and deployment flexibility.

The R&S ATS1500C is a movable antenna test chamber based on the CATR antenna compact measurement method. It has been specially designed to avoid ghost targets in the chamber during target simulation tests and includes a high-precision positioner for angular measurements.

The new R&S ARC-TEMP temperature test option creates a temperature-controlled environment around the radar under test for tests in the -40°C to 85°C temperature range. Heated or cooled air is provided by an external thermal airflow system that feeds the air to the temperature bubble mounted on the positioner. This adjusts the temperature without affecting the measurement performance of the chamber. Thanks to this feature, measurements at different temperatures can be automated without using a separate climatic chamber. As a result, faster radar tests are possible.

In addition, the ATC1500C can be supplemented with the new R&S ARC-FX90 universal feed antenna, which supports high frequencies 60 GHz to 90 GHz. The antenna includes an orthomode transducer that makes vertical and horizontal polarizations accessible in parallel.

With these new options for the R&S ATS1500C, designers can efficiently characterize RF transmitters, calibrate antenna splitters, measure antenna patterns, test robustness to interference and verify compliance with regulations such as ETSI or FCC. They can also plan test and calibration procedures for later mass production. The system is used as a reference environment before procedures are ported to a production tester.

The manufacturer states that the ATS1500C combined with the R&S AREG800A Automotive Radar Echo Generator is the most complete system on the market for automotive radar module development, validation, calibration and compliance testing.

The new universal feed antenna (R&S ARC-FX90) will be available in late 2022 and the temperature option (R&S ARC-TEMP) in the first quarter of 2023. Both options are hardware enhancements for the R&S ATS1500C and can be retrofitted.
