Siemens opens its arms to automotive electronics developers

With the expansion, redesign and inclusion of the Capital design software suite, Siemens is taking a major step towards developers of electronic systems for vehicles and aircraft. The aim is to enable developers to develop better products at lower cost in less time.

Developers of electronic systems for cars, off-road vehicles and aircraft are already familiar with the situation: software is increasingly becoming the focus of development efforts; an ever-larger share of the development budget is being spent on the development of program code and data networks. At the same time, this increases the complexity of their products and systems: Innovation requires more signals, more functionality, more network connections and more lines of code. In addition, more and more legal regulations regarding functional safety and environmental compatibility must be observed.

At the same time, developers along the value-added process still work in isolated segments, the infamous knowledge silos. This makes collaboration more difficult. Especially in the automotive industry, this situation results in losses in the triple-digit million range, Elevenci Automotive Consulting has observed. “A holistic approach to the entire development process is therefore the order of the day,” explains Martin O’Brien, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Integrated Electrical Systems Group at Siemens Digital Industries Software. “It’s not just a question of cost. It is also important to ensure the traceability of design decisions and the verifiability of designs”.

The scope of Capilat’s responsibilities has been significantly extended 

This is why Siemens is now expanding its Capital software suite (which in turn is part of the Xcelerator product portfolio of software, services and development platforms). So far, Capital has focused mostly on the development of wire harnesses, but new functions have been added for the development of E/E systems, especially for the development of components that play a central role in automotive electronics: ECUs, communication networks, software architectures and Autosar-compatible software.


These new functions support developers in the design and evaluation of E/E systems. They enable a model-based, integrated end-to-end process for design, manufacturing and maintenance.

Cable harness: The unseen challenge

As part of the Xcelerator portfolio, Capital will thus be more closely integrated into Siemens’ Teamcenter universe of engineering software, which includes solutions for product lifecycle management, mechanical design, simulation and low-code development environments. This comprehensive integration into the existing engineering ecosystem also enables the creation of a comprehensive “digital twin” of the product. Important elements of the design process, such as simulation and verification, are thus facilitated and are possible earlier in the development process, explains O’Brien.

The bottom line is that this should pay off not only for the development department, but for the entire company: This comprehensive functionality of the software and its level of integration enables higher product quality at lower costs. Also not unimportant: The effort required to ensure compliance – especially in the aerospace industry, but increasingly also in the development of cars – is reduced.
