After the takeover of Mentor Graphics, Siemens is introducing a new integrated solution for software development in the automotive sector. It addresses the many critical product development challenges associated with the strong increase in embedded software in smart cars.

With the new software, Siemens integrates Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software. The result is a solution for the automotive industry that can be used to seamlessly manage two fundamentally different life cycles: electromechanical systems and software development for controlling such physical systems. Automotive companies can expand software functionality and traceability while improving product quality. Recall actions resulting from embedded software can then be reduced to a minimum. With this announcement, the Siemens Business Unit for PLM Software will present the first of a series of industry solutions for the Digital Enterprise.

For automotive companies, it is a major challenge to manage the development of embedded software in close synchronization with the production of physical systems. The main reason is that the life cycles of the product itself and the software are completely different. Software development is controlled independently of other processes. The interface is validated with the hardware only at individual, predefined control points. In the age of intelligently networked cars, however, the interrelation between software and the physical system becomes more complex, revealing the weak spots of current processes, tools and methods. A digital twin of the vehicle systems can represent both the physical and digital behavior of networked cars. Development managers regard this as a necessary step to implement innovations.
