To support the positioning market with state-of-the-art GNSS chipsets and modules, STMicroelectronics has introduced the Teseo-VIC3DA, the latest member of its Teseo family of modules.

The Teseo-VIC3DA combines ST's high-performance, automotive-grade Teseo III GNSS IC with the 6-axis MEMS inertial measurement unit (IMU) and dead reckoning software, also designed for automotive applications, to create a purpose-built navigation module qualified for automotive applications.  It enables the realisation of competitively priced automotive navigation, fleet management and insurance monitoring applications, the manufacturer explains.

The automotive-grade GNSS IC Teseo III at the heart of the system has already proven itself in high-end systems and is said to enjoy an excellent reputation thanks to its accuracy and efficiency, ST let it be known. With support for multiple satellite constellations, allowing simultaneous reception of GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou and QZSS signals, the device offers robust tracking capabilities. ST's six-axis MEMS IC also makes super-high resolution motion tracking available in advanced vehicle navigation and telematics applications.

With its combination of ST's Teseo III, IMU and dead reckoning, the Teseo-VIC3DA module ensures extremely accurate positioning performance in critical environments such as tunnels, under bridges, in subways and parking garages, and in city centres between tall buildings.

The Teseo-VIC3DA operates on an operating voltage of 3.3 V to simplify system integration. The extremely low current consumption of only 17 µA in standby mode protects the on-board power supply of the respective vehicle. Equipped with an integrated, highly accurate and temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO), the module achieves the excellent accuracy of 1.5 m CEP in typical automotive applications. A special RTC (Real-Time Clock) oscillator also helps achieve a short Time To First Fix (TTFF).

Equipped with flash-resident firmware, the Teseo VIC3DA can be updated with new firmware as required using the free Teseo software suite. The VIC3DA achieves a fix rate of up to 30 Hz with dead reckoning and features very low latency to reduce the jitter of the UART channel. The module can operate autonomously with or without odometer information.

To jump-start development, the stand-alone, USB-powered EVB-VIC3DA evaluation platform is also available.
