According to Bosch, vehicle manufacturers increasingly want to do without mechanical switches, buttons, and controls in the cockpit. On the other hand, large monitors are high on the wish list - as is the curved instrument display. It combines a large number of digital displays under its surface and takes up almost two centimeters less space than a non-curved screen of comparable size.
The contents displayed on the instrument cluster with a screen diagonal of around 31 centimetres (12.3”) are determined by the driver according to his / her personal preference. An intelligent control system ensures that the driver is always shown exactly what he wants to see. For example, the driver can choose between detailed information on the current journey, the navigation map, telephone contacts or details on the playlist currently being played. Each piece of information can be displayed either over the entire display or combined with other content. It is also possible to zoom into the navigation map directly on the instrument cluster.
The demands placed on car displays in terms of quality and robustness are high. The driver can reliably recognize screen displays even when the sun is shining directly on the vehicle display. The curved instrument cluster is manufactured in a process called optical bonding. This method ensures high-contrast displays even in bright ambient light. In this process, the instrument display and glass cover are glued together directly. This close connection of the two components means that the instrument cluster reflects up to four times less light. As a result, the driver is hardly dazzled at all and the display displays are rich in contrast and clear in both direct sunlight and darkness.
