Daimler orders battery cells for e-cars for € 20 billion
Step by step, carmakers are getting serious with the switch to electric drive. Now Daimler is already setting the course and buying battery cells in large quantities: At least 20 billion euros will Daimler spend on this by 2030.

In the next three years, Daimler plans to launch 130 electrified model variants via its Mercedes Cars passenger car arm - and this does not even include the electric trucks and buses that are currently being designed in the vehicle manufacturer's development laboratories. "After investing billions in the development of the electric fleet and the expansion of our global battery network, we are now taking the next step: With the purchase of battery cells for more than 20 billion euros, we are consistently driving the change to the electric future of our company," explained Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche in a press release.

In addition, the company is investing 10 billion euros in the expansion of the Mercedes-Benz Cars electric fleet and a further billion euros in the global battery production network within its global production network.

The battery cells are to come from unspecified suppliers in Asia and Europe; these companies also plan to expand in the USA as an important market for electric mobility, according to the press release. The further processing of the purchased cells into battery systems will take place in Daimler's own production network. In future, this network will comprise eight factories on three continents. The first factory in Kamenz (Saxony, Germany) is already in series production, the second factory in Kamenz will start series production at the beginning of 2019. Two further factories will be built in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, one at the Sindelfingen site (both in Baden-Württemberg, Germany) and one each at the Beijing (China), Bangkok (Thailand) and Tuscaloosa (USA) sites. The company regards the local production of batteries as an important success factor in its electrical offensive; at the same time, this is regarded as be the decisive building block for flexibly and efficiently meeting the worldwide demand for electric vehicles.
