Elektrobit, Unity Technologies develop immersive 3D cockpits
The embedded software provider Elektrobit (EB) and Unity Technologies, a platform for the creation and execution of interactive real-time 3D content (RT3D), have joined forces to design and optimise graphical HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces) for the car.

Driven by the increasing number of high-performance computing platforms in cars and the growing number and size of displays installed in vehicles, the demand for photorealistic and user-friendly real-time 3D displays is growing. To make such user experiences possible, graphic designers and HMI development teams need end-to-end toolchains that support the design process through to implementation.

The collaboration between Elektrobit and Unity will combine the power of Unity's real-time 3D rendering platform with Elektrobit's EB Guide HMI development toolchain. With their combined expertise, EB and Unity aim to provide impetus for next generation real-time 3D automotive HMIs. Vehicle manufacturers and tier-one suppliers could thus benefit from shorter market introduction times and a reliable basis for the entire development process, the cooperation partners advertise.

"Real-time 3D redefines the experience in the car of the future. We are moving at high speed into the age of highly automated vehicles. The HMI experience is becoming increasingly important," explains Julien Faure, General Manager & Vice President Industrial and Media & Entertainment at Unity. They chose Elektrobit as their cooperation partner because, as a specialist in the automotive industry, this company covers the entire process from user interface design to series production.

With this cooperation, Unity wants to accelerate the development cycles for 3D graphic displays in cockpits and infotainment. The company cites a smartphone-like user interface for the car as a model.
