Embedded motor controllers for use at high temperatures
TDK Corporation is expanding its portfolio of Micronas brand embedded motor controllers to include products for use at high temperatures. The devices are intended, for example, for applications in the powertrains of vehicles with combustion engines and in temperature management systems in electric and hybrid vehicles.

The new devices for belong to Micronas’ embedded motor controller family with LIN bus interface for automotive applications. The HVC 4xxxF family integrates an Arm standard microcontroller with six independent 500 mA half-bridge drivers and many additional functions to implement compact and cost-effective motor applications. The motor controllers can drive small stepper, brushed (BDC), as well as brushless (BLDC) motors in applications that demand peak currents up to 1 A.

The HVC 4222F and HVC 4422F motor controllers are designed to drive intelligent actuators in environments with temperatures up to 150°C. The manufacturer names actuators in the radiator grille, as well as intelligent valves and pumps, as the main possible applications.

The HVC 4222F offers 32k of Flash memory, while the HVC 4422F is equipped with 64k of Flash for more complex software implementations.

With its high computing power, the HVC family also enables the implementation of complex motor control algorithms, such as Space Vector Modulation (SVM) for synchronous motors (PMSM), sensorless block commutation (BEMF), and various algorithms for stepper motors with current limiting and stall detection. For more precise motor control, eleven general purpose input/output (GPIO) pins enable the integration of Hall switches or 2D/3D sensors from TDK's extensive sensor portfolio.

Samples are available now; volume production will start in the second quarter of 2021.
