Embedded Power chips replace relays in automotive applications
Infineon’s new TLE985x series enables highly integrated, H-bridge driver control solutions for 2-phase DC and single-phase brushless DC motors. Qualified to AEC-Q100, the chips can replace relays in simple motor control applications such as sunroofs and window regulators.

Due to the higher level of integration, switching from relays to MOSFETs allows lower system costs and other benefits: PWM control and the integrated and calibrated current measuring amplifier allow the motor currents to be adapted, thus better aligning the mechanics and the motor to the respective application. The circuit board and the motor become smaller. At the same time, noise behavior improves.

The TLE985x devices integrate an ARM Cortex-M0 processor and peripheral modules for motor control, power supply and communication in a single chip. Two integrated measuring units (analog-to-digital converter) for monitoring temperature, battery voltage and four monitor inputs save pins. Battery voltage can be applied directly to these inputs, saving costs for additional components such as external voltage dividers or shutdown transistors. In addition, the chips have two full duplex serial interfaces (UART) with LIN support.

A new feature of the TLE985x family is its adaptive MOSFET driver. The control algorithm can compensate for MOSFET parameter scattering in the system by automatically adjusting the gate current curve depending on the required switching times. This allows the system to be simultaneously optimized for EME (electromagnetic emissions, low rise rates) and power dissipation (short dead times).

The product family includes five devices with different flash memory sizes (48-96 kB) and temperature ranges (Tj to 175 °C). They also differ in the number of half-bridge drivers for uni- and bidirectional DC motor applications.

All TLE985x products are based on the same hardware and software platform as Infineon's other embedded power products (TLE984x, TLE986x and TLE987x), enabling design synergies. It also allows customers to reuse parts of the software.

Samples of the TLE985x devices will be available from March 2019.
