Hella extends electromobility portfolio, targeting low volt systems
Disproportionate growth is forecast for both fully electric vehicles and partially electrified drive systems such as mild hybrids in the coming years. A central technology here is the lithium-ion battery, and here also the electronic battery management systems (BMS). The supplier Hella is now supplementing its product portfolio with a 48V line.

The new 48-volt system is to go into series production at a German vehicle manufacturer next summer, the company announced. Together with a Chinese cell producer, a OEM will be supplied with battery packs consisting of battery cells and the associated battery management system from Hella. During development, the company relied on its experience in high-voltage battery electronics - Hella has been producing high-voltage battery management systems for battery electric vehicles (BEV) as well as for full and plug-in hybrids since 2016.

This know-how has now been transferred in particular to the requirements for mild hybrids. Hella's 48-volt battery management system is thus intended to make a fundamental contribution to realising CO2-reducing functionalities of a mild hybrid. These include in particular the recovery of energy during braking (recuperation), stronger acceleration (boosting) as well as coasting at idle speed with the engine switched off (sailing).

In the low-voltage range, Hella is also developing a battery management system for 12-volt applications. Here, too, the production of a battery pack is planned in cooperation with another cell producer. The 12-volt battery management system can be used in electric vehicles. Here, in addition to the standby power supply, for example when the vehicle is stationary or parked, it serves primarily as a redundant power supply. On the other hand, it can also be installed in vehicles with classic internal combustion engines, where it can prepare a technical solution for the potential ban on lead-acid batteries.
