High-performance shunt resistor for electric vehicles
With the presentation of its new BAX shunt resistor, Isabellenhütte is taking due account of the requirements that electromobility is imposing on components for high-power battery management systems.

Currents of up to 1,000 amps flow through high-voltage batteries with voltages of up to 800V, such as those installed in electric vehicles. Such extremely high power loads require resistors with a larger construction and lower resistance values to keep power losses to an absolute minimum. Alongside the BAS, the BAX shunt is the largest low-ohmic shunt in the company’s product portfolio and also the most powerful.

In other applications, e.g. solar inverters with even higher currents, larger components are by no means a rarity - unlike in the auto industry, where components generally need to be particularly small and, at the same time, as lightweight as possible. The product is designed to serve as a battery management shunt and offers long-term stability. It features a permanent power output of up to 50 watts, and permanent currents of up to 1,000 A. Customer-specific adaptations of the resistance values of the standard component are possible. The shunt is also available in a nickel-plated version.

The BAX shunt is currently available in two variants. One with a resistance value of 0.02 mOhm, and the other with an equivalent value of 0.005 mOhm, with the aim of reducing power losses to an absolute minimum. Dimensions are 84 mm by 36 mm with a thickness of 4 mm.
