TI's new AWR2944 radar sensor joins the company's portfolio of analogue and embedded processing products and technologies to give automotive engineers more tools to innovate vehicles. The increased ability to quickly detect objects, monitor blind spots and efficiently negotiate intersections and curves paves the way for automakers to realise their vision of a collision-free future.
"Lane changes and negotiating tight curves currently result in the most complex design challenges for our customers," explains Yariv Raveh, millimetre wave radar manager at TI. "To improve driving safety, driver assistance systems must process data quickly and accurately and communicate clearly with the driver."
According to the US Federal Highway Administration, more than 50% of fatal and injury crashes occur at or near intersections. With the new safety requirements for motor vehicles under United Nations Regulation 79 and updated New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) standards coming into force, car manufacturers must upgrade their steering systems to support driver assistance systems and automated driving functions.
The AWR2944 can help automakers meet these safety regulations by offering best-in-class RF performance combined with approximately 30% less space than today's radar sensors. The AWR2944 offers 33% higher resolution than existing products thanks to the integration of a fourth transmitter, enabling vehicles to detect obstacles more clearly and avoid collisions. The new sensor's unique hardware, supported by Doppler Division Multiple Access (DDMA)-based signal processing, also improves the ability to detect oncoming vehicles up to 40% further away.
In addition, the software compatibility offered by TI gives automakers the ability to scale their solutions across their entire fleet. The extensive support and design resources include technical content, evaluation modules and real-world application examples that make ADAS design easier. Looking ahead, TI believes that collaboration between semiconductor suppliers, system designers and automotive manufacturers is essential to reduce time-to-market and meet ever-evolving regulations.
To jump-start their designs, automotive manufacturers can use the AWR2944EVM evaluation module for the AWR2944.
