IC integrates numerous door control functions for cars
With the L99UDL01, STMicroelectronics introduces a universal door lock control IC for motor vehicles. The device contains six MOSFET half-bridge outputs and two half-bridge gate drivers, as well as protection and diagnostic functions designed to improve safety, simplify design and save space.

As a complete, centralized solution for electronic control of car locks by a Body Control Module (BCM), the L99UDL01 replaces several separate motor drivers along with their associated analog and passive components. At the same time a more sophisticated functionality is offered.

The chip contains a safety feature that overrides normal operation in the event of an accident to allow first responders to access the vehicle. Benefits are further enhanced by PWM control of the output current and sophisticated diagnostic functions that can detect overcurrents, line breaks, and short circuits to the battery and ground. The load integrity tests can also be performed without activating the load.

The six integrated MOSFET half-bridges can be connected either independently of each other or as two channels, each with three half-bridges connected in parallel to share higher load currents. The output MOSFETs are fully protected and have low RDS(on) values, which increases energy efficiency and facilitates thermal management. For optimum performance, key parameters such as turn-on time, off-fault detection, and output current magnitude and direction are adjustable. Finally, programmable current limiting gives designers the ability to reduce the load on door lock motors, thereby increasing reliability.

The two half-bridge drivers improve flexibility by allowing designers to connect N-channel MOSFETs or smart power devices of their choice to drive higher power loads. In addition, the built-in active recirculation of the drivers minimizes power dissipation. Protection functions for the external power devices, such as drain-source current monitoring and off-fault detection, are also built in.
