TDK expands its range of Micronas embedded motor controllers with the HVC 4420F family with extended flash memory to drive small brush motors, stepper motors or brushless motors. The HVC 4420F meets the current requirements of the automotive industry for diagnostic functions, which have now also been introduced in the field of intelligent actuators.

With an expansion of the flash memory to 64 KB and the SRAM to 4 KB, the HVC 4420F is the answer to the increased functional and diagnostic requirements of vehicle manufacturers. In terms of diagnostics, each OEM has its own ideas and procedures with different strategies for sensor data fusion, actuator status detection and all resulting activities. To ensure the required data analysis, software routines must be implemented that activate the underlying hardware diagnostic functions, taking into account the OEM's framework to ensure proper integration. Due to its larger memory and integrated diagnostic capabilities, the new HVC 4420F provides both the memory capacity and processing power to perform these actions; according to TDK, this is a unique selling point in the field of intelligent actuators.

TDK sees potential applications for the new chip primarily in the area of engine grille control, the implementation of intelligent flaps and pumps, and air conditioning.

The HVC 4420F is part of the Micronas High Voltage Controller (HVC) family for Smart Actuators. The HVC family combines an ARM standard microcontroller core with additional functions to realize particularly compact and cost-effective system designs for automotive applications and for use in other industries. The HVC 4420F is equipped with a 32-bit CPU core (ARM Cortex-M3) and 64 kB flash memory and includes timer/counter, interrupt controller, multi-channel ADC, SPI and Enhanced PWM with diagnostic function, which is required for safety-critical applications. An extended LIN UART with LIN 2.x transceiver and voltage regulator to connect the controller directly to the automotive electrical system (5.4 V - 18 V) complete the all-in-one concept. Various energy-saving modes reduce power consumption. A series of integrated digital and analog circuit units, such as comparators with virtual star point, current scaling and a programmable amplifier enable the user to reduce the number of external components to a minimum.
