Magnetic angle sensors target commercial vehicles
Vibrations and shocks in vehicles and especially in commercial vehicles place high demands on the installed sensor technology: It must be robust, yet easy to install. The magnetic sensors from Novotechnik meet these requirements and now also provide diagnostic data with CAN SAE J1939.

The magnetic angle sensors of the RFC-4800 series from Novotechnik are compact, easy to mount and measure the angle of rotation over a full 360 degrees with a resolution of up to 14 bits. Now these contactless sensors for use in commercial vehicles are also available with CAN SAE J1939 interface. This protocol offers high immunity to interference, low cabling requirements and diagnostic options. Other attractive sensor functions include parameterizable direction of rotation, position offset and a revolution counter. The position and velocity signals are output in one or two channels. The magnetic angle sensors are also very robust: they can withstand oscillations and vibrations of up to 20 g (according to IEC 600658-2-6) and shocks of up to 50 g (according to IEC 68068-2-27) and meet all EMC specifications required in mobile applications. The requirements of the ECE-R10 regulation for electromagnetic compatibility are far exceeded. The permissible ambient temperature is between -40 °C and +105 °C, the requirements of protection class IP67 and IP6K9K are fulfilled.

The sensors are easy to mount in the vehicle. A position-giving magnet is attached to the rotating axis for angle measurement. Depending on the angle of rotation, the orientation of the magnetic field and thus the signals of the sensor, which is only about 15 mm flat, change. This signal change is converted by the sensor IC into an output signal proportional to the angle of rotation and made available to the higher-level controller. The linearity of the measuring signal is +/- 0.5 %, the repeat accuracy 0.36°. The sensor can be positioned with an air gap of up to 5 mm from the position sensor. Since neither shaft nor bearing are necessary and the measuring distance is variable, application-related installation tolerances are unproblematic, the vendor promises
