According to KDPOF CEO and co-founder Carlos Pardo, the production start of automotive POF transceivers marks a significant milestone. The KD1053 is claimed to be the first fully integrated automotive transceiver to implement the physical layer of Gigabit Ethernet over POF. In addition, KDPOF offers a range of additional equipment such as application descriptions, reference design, evaluation board and kit to enable users a quick and smooth introduction to their developments.

Automobile applications with the KD1053 include 100 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s Ethernet connections such as battery management systems (BMS), cross-domain communication backbones, antenna modules, autonomous driving and driver assistance systems, including all-round visibility.

The KD1053’s features meet the requirements of automotive manufacturers: high connectivity with a flexible, digital host interface, low latency, low jitter and short connection setup time. It also complies with the new standard addition IEEE Standard 802.3bv for Gigabit Ethernet via POF. This defines the physical-layer specifications and management parameters for network applications in automotive, industrial and home applications via POF. The standard addition is the answer to the need for high-bandwidth Ethernet solutions. Especially for applications with shorter connection lengths, the optical polymer fiber offers unique advantages. POF technology surpasses solutions based on copper cables not only in electromagnetic compatibility and immunity, but also guarantees galvanic isolation, low weight and low cost.
