With the Belgian semiconductor manufacturer Melexis and the German LED specialist Osram Opto Semiconductors, two heavyweights in the field of automotive electronics have joined the alliance.
The ISELED alliance, founded in 2016, aims to install a complete ecosystem with the corresponding hardware and software around the ISELED concept. The key product is an "intelligent" digital RGB LED in a very compact housing. With this innovative approach, not only can LED control be significantly simplified, but the possibilities of LED lighting in automobiles can also be significantly expanded.
New automotive interior lighting uses hundreds of LEDs, which usually consist of flexible strips with numerous RGB LEDs that need to be individually controlled to create a dynamic lighting effect. With ISELED, each of the "digital LEDs" consists of a red, green and blue LED, which are integrated together with a controller in a small housing. The "digital LEDs" can be connected via a daisy chain. A total of up to 4079 of these digital LEDs can be arranged via a differential 2-wire bus with a data rate of 2 Mbit/s and controlled by an external controller such as NXP's S32K series. This opens up new applications and lighting controls for applications that are not possible with the relatively slow LIN bus. With a data rate of 2 Mbit/s, the ISELED system enables lighting effects at video speed.
