New Jacinto processor generation combines functional safety, deep learning

The new platform’s first two automotive building blocks, the TDA4VM processors for driver assistance systems and the DRA829V processors for gateway systems, include dedicated integrated accelerators to segment and accelerate the execution of data-intensive tasks such as image processing and deep learning. In addition, the TDA4VM and DRA829V processors include a functional safety microcontroller, enabling OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to support both safety-critical ASIL-D-certified tasks and convenience functions with a single chip. The fact that both devices use the same software platform reduces system complexity and lowers costs.

The TDA4VM offers chip-integrated analysis functions in combination with pre-processing of sensor signals, which benefits the efficiency of the system. System designers can thus support front camera applications with high-resolution 8 MP cameras to increase visibility and offer additional advanced features such as driver assistance. The new TI processors can also support four to six 3-MP cameras simultaneously, while processing the signals of other sensor types such as radar, lidar or ultrasound on one chip. This multi-level capability enables the TDA4VM to act as a central processor for driver assistance systems, while also providing the critical features for automatic parking. These include all-round vision and image processing for displays, which enhances the vehicle’s perceptive capabilities over a full 360°.


With the DRA829V gateway processor, the chip manufacturer offers a highly integrated component for vehicle communication. With increasing connectivity, automotive gateways need a flexible processor to cope with growing data volumes and to meet the ever-increasing demands for autonomy and increased data throughput. The DRA829V is the first processor in the industry to feature an integrated PCIe switch and also includes an eight-port TSN-capable Gigabit Ethernet switch to provide the prerequisites for faster, high-performance computing and communication functions throughout the entire vehicle.

Combined with the ability to support safety-critical ASIL-D operations as well as non-safety-critical tasks, these computing and communication functions give OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers the ability to support multiple, differently critical applications in the same device. Last but not least, the increased on-chip bandwidth enables developers to coordinate the development and validation of software in vehicles, resulting in more dynamic updates and upgrades.
