New MIPI specs set simplifies in-vehicle display connectivity

MIPI Alliance simplifies in-vehicle display connectivity
To meet the requirements of the increasing number of high-performance displays in vehicles, the MIPI Alliance has introduced a specification for SerDes connections. These MIPI Automotive SerDes Solutions (MASS) are designed to standardise SerDes data connections in vehicles. The applications extend beyond the connection of mere screens.

The new specifications build on the MIPI A-PHY asymmetric SerDes interface, as well as the MIPI Display Serial Interface 2 (MIPI DSI-2), VESA Embedded DisplayPort and DisplayPort (VESA eDP/DP) display protocols. This creates high-range source-to-sink connectivity between vehicle displays and their associated electronic control units (ECUs).

 

The new specifications that complete the display stack include

  • MIPI Protocol Adaption Layers (PALs) for MIPI DSI-2 and VESA eDP/DP. This allows display components based on these protocols to map their video, audio and control data for transmission over long-range MIPI A-PHY networks using the A-Packet format.

  • MIPI Display Service Extensions (DSE) v1.0, which provide functional security features and support for HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection).

  • MIPI Display Command Set (DCS) v1.5, an update to the standard command set for DSI-2.

The completion of the display stack is regarded as an important step in the creation of the overarching MASS framework. According to the will of its spiritual fathers, this framework is to be the foundation for a standardised, reliable connectivity framework for the integration of image sensors and displays in vehicles that is suitable for long cable lengths (within the car). The requirements of functional safety are taken into account. For displays, the framework supports point-to-point and daisy-chain topologies as well as heterogeneous displays. In addition to IVI displays, the application options also include display units of safety-critical driver assistance systems such as lane departure warning systems as well as virtual side mirror and rear-view cameras.
