Nissan, Witricity team up on wireless EV charging
Charging without clumsy cables is electrifying the industry: After cooperation contracts at the level of chips (STMicroelectronics) and subsystems (Delphi), wireless charging company Witricity has announced a collaboration at the car level: Japanese OEM Nissan is inclined to adopt Witricity’s wireless EV charging system.

Expecting the breakthrough for battery electric vehicles within the next five years, carmakers are now very focused on streamlining the EV charging experience. The WiTricity Drive wireless charging system allows for a charging pad on or under the ground that uses the company’s patented magnetic resonance technology to send energy to the vehicle parked above it, requiring no cables or moving parts. Witricity claims high efficiency and charge rates; the system is capable of charging all types of vehicles ranging from low ground clearance sports cars to high ground clearance SUVs.

Nissan, together with other carmakers, has recognized that interoperability is critical for simplifying the EV charging experience and adoption of EVs more broadly. This means ensuring car owners they can charge their vehicles at any station regardless of vehicle size and type, and without the need to handle heavy high-voltage, high-current wires and connectors. WiTricity and Nissan are collaborating to ensure that wireless charging systems will provide the high degree of interoperability, ease of use, and high efficiency that consumers expect.

WiTricity Corporation provides technology to enable wireless power transfer over distance using magnetic resonance. Application fields range from smartphones to cars. In this field, Witricity is competing against Qualcomm with its Halo technology.
