The collaboration with EB aims at automated driving: EB has ported its Robinos software framework to NXP’s Bluebox computing platform. Both the software and the computing platform are designed to implement automated driving functions. The joint solution will make it easier for carmakers and tier ones to develop such functions.
According to NXP CTO Lars Reger, automotive OEMs currently face significant hurdles in the quest to bring self-driving applications quickly and efficiently to the market. The challenges are numerous. For instance, routing multiple streams of automotive sensor data within the car, and tackling complex software developments in-house and creating differentiation is not trivial to master for the carmakers, solutions therefore are in high demand. The combination of BlueBox and Robinos delivers unique benefits to carmakers, NXP promises.
EB Robinos is a rather comprehensive software framework that enables carmakers to bring their driving features to series production faster and with less effort, said EB Executive Vice President Martin Schleicher. Currently the software offers the set of functionalities required for valet parking (which was demonstrated at the event). Over time, EB plans to add the functionalities for automated highway driving and urban driving, Schleicher explained.
NXPs development platform Bluebox covers the functionality of sensor fusion, decision making, trajectory planning and execution from a computational perspective and meets the requirements of functional safety standards. The platform contains near-series hardware but needs to be adapted to the respective OEMs specific needs.
In the area of infotainment, NXP has expanded its 15-year standing collaboration with Harman International, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung. The collaboration will cover over-the-air software updates, secure V2X communications and similar topics. Also, they will together tackle developments related to the connected in-car experience, including RF tuners, digital signal processors, amplifiers and application processors.
