Osram invests in Lidar expert LeddarTech
To benefit from the overall development towards autonomous driving, lighting systems manufacturer Osram has a acquired strategic stake of 25.1 per cent in LeddarTech Inc. The Canadian company is developing its own LiDAR technology for autonomous vehicles and driver assistance systems s incorporated into special chips and sensor modules for self-driving cars and driver assistant systems.

LeddarTech is a specialist for the detection of the environment by means of infrared light by LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). The highly developed optical sensor technology of the Canadians complements Osram’s own semiconductor product portfolio. Both companies are already collaborating at various levels. The investment sum for Osram is in the double-digit million euros.

"The investment in LeddarTech is a logical step on the way to becoming the leading solution provider in the field of sensor lights for autonomous vehicles, "said Stefan Kampmann, Osram Licht AG's technical director. "Our companies complement each other perfectly and we welcome Osram as a strategic investor," commenetd Charles Boulanger, CEO of LeddarTech. "We are on the way to become the reference address in the field of semiconductor-based LiDAR in the automotive sector and the alliance with the market leader for autolight is an important milestone for us." Boulanger stated: "This investment from Osram is part of a larger financing round currently under way by LeddarTech and expected to be finalized shortly. Further details will be provided after the closing of the round."

With its participation in LeddarTech, Osram is responding to the growing demand for LiDAR technology, which is indispensable for autonomous driving and many other applications in the mobility sector. LiDAR is a radar-based but infrared-based method for detecting objects and measuring distances and velocities.
