Developers of electronic systems for cars, off-road vehicles and aircraft are already familiar with the situation: software is increasingly becoming the focus of development efforts; an ever-larger share of the development budget is being spent on the development of program code and data networks. At the same time, this increases the complexity of their products and systems: Innovation requires more signals, more functionality, more network connections and more lines of code. In addition, more and more legal regulations regarding functional safety and environmental compatibility must be observed.
At the same time, developers along the value-added process still work in isolated segments, the infamous knowledge silos. This makes collaboration more difficult. Especially in the automotive industry, this situation results in losses in the triple-digit million range, Elevenci Automotive Consulting has observed. "A holistic approach to the entire development process is therefore the order of the day," explains Martin O'Brien, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Integrated Electrical Systems Group at Siemens Digital Industries Software. "It's not just a question of cost. It is also important to ensure the traceability of design decisions and the verifiability of designs".
This is why Siemens is now expanding its Capital software suite (which in turn is part of the Xcelerator product portfolio of software, services and development platforms). So far, Capital has focused mostly on the development of wire harnesses, but new functions have been added for the development of E/E systems, especially for the development of components that play a central role in automotive electronics: ECUs, communication networks, software architectures and Autosar-compatible software.
