Toyota plans open platform for high-resolution road maps
The Toyota Research Institute - Advanced Development (TRI-AD) in Japan and US-based map company Carmera are planning the joint automated production of high-resolution (HD) road maps. For the Toyota Research Institute, this is the first step towards implementing an open Automated Mapping Platform that collects data from vehicles of participating companies and develops high-resolution maps.

Automated driving requires reliable road information based on high-resolution map data. Although HD motorway maps are already in progress, they currently cover only 1% of the global road network. In addition, these high-resolution maps are now elaborately produced with the help of specialized vehicles in an almost completely manual process. Because these expensive vehicles are only available in very small quantities, it is a challenge to produce and maintain maps for cities and country roads off the motorways.

Initially, the two companies will conduct a feasibility study. Cameras in Toyota vehicles will collect data from the Tokyo city centre for several months. The collected images and data will be transmitted to Carmera's real-time platform and automatically converted into HD map data. The cameras use components of the Toyota Safety Sense safety system installed in Toyota vehicles worldwide.

By combining automatically generated maps with digital maps available today, it will be possible to provide automated vehicles with even more reliable road information in the future. And if vehicles all over the world can collect data for HD maps, this could enable automated driving on all roads.
