The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) recently released the Qi-1.3 specification, which requires authentication for greater security in the wireless transmission of up to 15W of power between a transmitter and receiver. To meet the requirements of the specification, Microchip Technology Inc. offers a corresponding reference design for wireless charging that provides developers of such charging systems in vehicles and in the consumer sector with the necessary tools and support for integration and enables the certification of new products.
Especially for developers who need to bring certified Qi 1.3 charging devices to market under tight timelines, Microchip's reference design with three charging coils offers a head start in product development. It incorporates the secure memory subsystem software in the wireless power microcontroller (MCU) and enables custom topologies and foreign object detection (FOD) integration.
Qi 1.3 is regarded as a significant update from Qi 1.2.4 and mandates hardware-based authentication between the transmitting and receiving devices for power transmission above 5W. By complying with the new authentication standard, developers can ensure that smartphones capable of receiving 15W of power receive it from a Qi-certified, authenticated transmitter to ensure safety.
Microchip's reference design includes all the necessary elements for wireless charging: Qi controller; Qi application software; authentication controller, which is a WPC-approved secure storage subsystem; and crypto software libraries that run on the Qi controller. It includes schematics, parts lists, software and design guidelines.

Microchip is working with Avnet to provide evaluation boards for the Qi reference design to qualified customers worldwide. To support its solution, Microchip offers its dsPIC33C series of digital signal controllers (DSCs) to run the Qi application software, as well as the ECC608/TA100 secure memory subsystem, which Microchip provides as a licensed WPC Manufacturing Certificate Authority. As a total system solution, the reference design also includes the MIC4605 and MCP14700 gate drivers, the MCP16331 and MCP1725 controllers, the MCP6C02
